Common houseplants toxic to cats
- Lilies (true lilies & daylilies) — the emergency case: even pollen groomed off fur can cause fatal kidney failure. No lilies in a cat household, ever.
- Sago palm — severely toxic; can cause liver failure.
- Pothos & philodendron — insoluble calcium oxalates: mouth burning, drooling, vomiting.
- Monstera — same oxalate irritation as pothos.
- Dieffenbachia (dumb cane) — intense oral swelling and drooling.
- Aloe vera — vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea.
- Snake plant — mildly toxic: nausea and vomiting.
- Tulips, hyacinths & daffodils — bulbs are the most toxic part.
- Canna and many ornamentals — toxicity varies; always check before bringing one home.
Symptoms of plant poisoning in cats
Drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing. If you suspect lily contact, treat it as an emergency and call your vet immediately — kidney damage begins within hours. For other plants, call your vet or a pet poison hotline and bring a photo or the plant's name.
